McGirlver

Some of you might know I'm kinda dorkass when it comes to handy work around the house. Dorkass because I don't trust contractors and I insist on fixing everything with my own bare hands. I'd like to think I've avoided many $60-$80 "diagnostic" fee and with how much jerryriggin I see done by contractors, shoot, I can do that myself.

Currently I am soooooo admiring the PermaFLOW Never-Clog drain. Excellent design and brilliant idea. It looks good enough to go on an exposed sink.

This dorkass is updating the amazon wishlist for a couple of these around the house.

MacGirlver – Makeup

Yeah, yeah so at one point of my life I might have used some super pale makeup, thought Andy Deane was the dreamiest, and didn’t wear a lot of colors, (shut up). That lasted about one morose year. I still have some makeup from then that I found can be turned into awesome highlighter for cheeks or brows. Actually this comes in handy to extend the lives of leftover anything powder.

Take a couple of combinations of powder, stir up the powder and add just enough water so the paste can go back into a compact/container. Leave the compact open in aerated area to dry for a couple of days. Now you get a new color combination in a compact, ready to use.

Some of the combinations examples:

white power + shimmer = highlighter for cheeks, nose bridge, eyes
bronzer + blush = natural glow summer cheeks
shimmer + matte eye shadow = shimmery eyeshadow

ok, I think you get the idea.

Why I’m Not at the NSS

I love Christmas and I love Leroy’s birthday. I usually get so excited about what I find for him that I end up giving him his presents way (and I mean slightly embarrassingly prematurely) before his birthday/Christmas. This year I managed to draw out the process by giving him one present a week and keep the bestest present for the big day. TODAY! (Yeah yeah I botched my weeks and is giving him two presents this week, I’ll get the timing down eventually).

So far I’ve given him a credit card sized camera, a line of men’s skin care products from Origins. (I am the scrub shopper in the relationship) For the big finale, to continue the richless chic, and because Leroy is from Pittsburgh, I made a custom giftwrap with butcher paper, and his favorite colors. It gave me a chance to play with patterns and it compliments the actual gift, a Pittsburgh print from JHill, for a total Pittsburghese present.

Yeah this guy has been one of my bestest friends since college, and I’m very glad that someone puts up with all my eccentricities on a daily basis. I’ve only missed one of his birthdays and that was because of my college graduation. With how many of birthdays his friends have forgotten thanks to George Luca’s sucky prequels, I just can’t miss out celebrating with him this year. So despite the Phoebe Cates sighting tweets and some really awesome designs I’m seeing on blogs on NSS, this dude is totally worth staying around town for. Especially since he’s been in and out of Dr. offices with sports injuries and I’m very thankful he will not need surgery in his birthday week. Whew. (this is why I hate sports)

Anywho…to steal the Bud Light line circa 1995, I love you man.

MacGirlver — Desk

I have various pieces of furniture all in varying wood stains. I have to say, unless all the woodstains match, I am NOT a natural wood person. So I’ve decided while I have the paints and rollers out, I will paint the furniture as I’m waiting for the trim paint to dry in the former family room.

Here the desk originally. It’s a cinnamon stained solid piece from Ikea back in the 90s.

Here it is drying… I think having various pieces but all white will have something that has the potential to look like pieces from Anthropology.

Yes, I’m incredibly messy painter and have to really lay down layer and layers of stuff to prevent the carpet from ending up like a Jackson Pollack painting. I should have worn a showercap while painting the underside of the desk though…

Never fear, this McGirlver used some pantiliner (new ones, you sickos) soaked in nail polish remover to wipe my head clean. Now the greys left are all natural. Change out of paint-stained clothes, throw on the ol Misfits sweatshirt and cute jeans, good to go.
