Dear Prudence

Strangely, since my parents were once upon a time diplomats, I do follow etiquette and I am a polite person. Each week, I find Dear Prudence on the Slate so I can learn how to handle various situations. I can't help but cheer every time Prudence gets a little catty and knowing that I would totally handle the situation the same way.

From this week...

Dear Third,Person You Don't Know Well: So, where do your parents live?

You: Unfortunately, my parents are both deceased.

PYDKW: I'm so sorry. That's terrible. What happened?

You: They died—and it's a painful subject so I hope you understand I'd rather not talk about it.

PYDKW: But you're so young! How old were you when they died? You: I'm so glad winter's finally over—aren't you? I saw some daffodils yesterday.

PYDKW: Did they die in an accident or something? You: You'll have to excuse me. I've got to get back to my desk. OR: You'll have to excuse me. I need to freshen my drink.

The only way this could be better is if the line from Romy and Michelle was used..."Would you excuse me? I cut my foot before and my shoe is filling up with blood."

  1. Oh man, I love Dear Prudence, I read it every week! I love when she trashes people for being, well, trashy. :)
